Mian ports in Southeast Africa includes Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Beira in Mozambique, Richards Bay and Durban in South Africa and Walvis Bay in Namibia. 

 

1Dar es Salaam

With a wide water area of about 950,000 square metres, Dar es Salaam can provide you with good bogue conditions even there is strong wind and waves outside the port. There are 11 main quay berths, the length of coastline is 2016m and the maximum water depth is 10m. Handling equipment includes all kinds of quay crane, gantry crane, movable crane, floating crane, container crane, barge, tugboat and roll-roll equipment, the maximum hoisting capacity is 120tons. Bulk carrier with loading capacity up to 30,000tons can berth alongside the bulk terminal and oil tanker with a 36,000 tons capacity can berth alongside oil tanker jetty port. The anchorage depth of large ships is about 15m. The container handling capacity in 1992 was 87,000TEU, cargo was 4,000,000tons. Main export goods are sisal hemp, tea, cotton, bean cake, lumber, coffee, copper and oilseeds, main import goods are steel, cotton products, food, machines, oil and cars. For all the holidays, work will won't be available during Christmas and May Day all day long.

 

2BEIRA

There are 10 main quay berths, the length of coastline is 1670m and the maximum water depth is 10m. Handling equipment includes all kinds of electric  crane, container crane, tugboat and roll-roll equipment. The maximum hoisting capacity of electric crane is 30tons and the container crane is 40tons, and maximum power of tugboat is 2,300 KW. Besides, there are two berths for oil ship, which allow maximum draught of 9.4m. The two berths are equipped with petroleum pipelines of which the diameters vary from 250~550MM, and can directly reach the tank farm. The area of freight shed in the port is about 33,000 square metres while the open storage ground can hold 20,000tons of ore. Railways that allow direct loading is available in all the ports. The handling efficiency of coal is 700tons per hour, and oil is 400tons, float ore is 350tons. The anchorage depth of large ships is about 13m. Beila was constructed from 1980, in the year 2004, she handled 1,367,238 tons of cargo, and by the end of August 2008, it operated 36,888 standard containers.

 

 3. RICHARDS BAY

As the second biggest bulk port in the world, Richards Bay has a land area of about 2157 hectares and a water area of about 1495 hectares, there are 20 main quay berths, the length of coastline is 5020m and the maximum water depth is 17.5m. The 20 berths includes dry bulk wharf, multi-purpose wharf and private coal wharf, excludes dredger wharf and tugboat wharf. Loading equipment includes all kinds of quay crane, ship loader and tugboat. The capacity of warehouse in the port area is 900,000tons. Coal wharf can provide berth to ships with a maximum load capacity of 170,000tons. In the year 2005, the cargo handling capacity is 8900tons. The free time of demurrage here is 3 days.

 

4.Durban

Country: South Africa

Port Properties: bay port, base port

With a 160,000-thusand- square metres water area, Durban Port is surrounded by breakwater. There are 60 main quay berths, the length of coastline is 92300m and the maximum water depth is 12.8m. Handling equipment includes all kinds of quay crane, movable crane, floating crane, container crane, truck crane, belt conveyor and roll-roll equipment, the maximum hoisting capacity of quay crane is 80tons while the float crane is 200tons. There are also petroleum pipelines of which the diameters vary from 203.2~254MM. The loading efficiency of grain is 1290tons per hour, and manganese ore is 400tons, coal is 1100tons, sugar is 700tons. The unloading efficiency of grain is 1250tons per hour. The capacity of open storage ground in the port is 200,00tons, and the sugar warehouse is 520,000tons. The anchorage depth of large ships is about 18m. The free time of demurrage here is 3 workdays. Work won’t be available during New Year’s Day and Christmas.

 

5. Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is the only deep - water port in Namibia, there are 8 marginal berths, the length of the coastline is 1367m, there are also 2 float wharf whose loading capacity are 8,000tons. The main loading equipment includes Mobile Harbour Crane, Reach Stacker, Forklift, Hauler, Container Trailer, MHC Spreader, Wharf Crane and Gantry Crane. The area of warehouse and freight shed is 126,000 square metres while the container and bulk yard is 3.2 hectares. Work time of Walvis Bay is 7:00 -12:00 and 13:00-17:00 on workdays, 8:00-12:00 and 13:00-17:00 on weekends and public holidays, time can be extended under special permission. The free time of demurrage here is 3 workdays.
